Chronic constipation (CC) has become an important factor affecting people’s quality of life. With the continuous improvement of living standards and the increasing trend of aging population, the prevalence of chronic constipation is also increasing significantly. The prevalence of chronic constipation in adult populations in China is approximately 4% to 6%1, and it increases with age. The prevalence rate of chronic constipation in the population over 60 years old can reach as high as 22%, and the incidence rate in western countries is as high as 14% to 30% 2.
Chronic constipation typically manifests as reduced defecation frequency (less than three times per week), dry and hard stool, and/or difficulty with defecation. Difficulty with defecation includes symptoms such as prolonged and strenuous defecation, manual assistance for defecation, straining during defecation, incomplete evacuation, and anal distension. The diagnosis of functional constipation is primarily based on the Rome IV criteria3.
Constipation can be caused by a variety of factors and requires an evaluation of the underlying causes. In the absence of secondary causes, it may be related to slow colonic transit and/or defecatory dysfunction (pelvic floor dysfunction). Jiahui Gastroenterology provides relevant examinations to your specific condition and develops an appropriate treatment plan based on examination results. It is recommended that patients with constipation undergo colonoscopy to rule out organic bowel diseases, and perform colonic transit tests to assess the type of constipation. For slow-transit constipation, in addition to medication, a new physical treatment, colon vibration capsules, can be used to aid defecation. For pelvic floor dysfunction, comprehensive treatment by Rehabilitation Department can be considered. Constipation can also be treated with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
